A quarter of India has been hit by severe drought, as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared from the ramparts of the Red Fort in New Delhi on Independence Day. Union agriculture, food and civil supplies minister Sharad Pawar saysnearly 80 per cent of the country is under threat.
The Andhra CM is expected to seek a grant of Rs 2,000 crore under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act to provide wage employment to 70 lakh people. This will be in addition to the Rs 4,500 crore already allocated in the budget.
